Mossy Hike

Today Dave and I did a 6 mile hike in Mullerthal, located in an area of Luxembourg called "Little Switzerland." We had driven through the area a couple of weeks ago while on our way to the castle in Vianden (a few posts back) and noticed amazing rock formations throughout the woods.  After some Googling, we found out that the area is known for having close to 100% humidity year-round so the vegetation here is very unusual for this part of Europe. We didn't notice any strange or exotic plants but for the second week in December it was incredibly green and lush. the photos don't really do it justice - the richness and vibrancy of the greens were stunning. There were also caves and tunnels throughout the formations, as well as rivers, falls and stone bridges. Dave said it was possibly his favorite hike of all-time. It was certainly a favorite of mine. The nicest thing about hiking here is that the trails are in pristine condition and everything is so well marked. you even find perfectly-maintained benches in the middle of nowhere, so you can sit and have a dignified snack or drink break.

There are lots of stories surrounding the caves and tunnels - about elves, princesses, ogres, fairies, etc. who have buried treasures, or died there. it definitley felt very "magical" there.

Can you see me? So small next to this mammoth rock.

I liked this stone formation - it looked like a pea pod to me... 0r a sideways smile.

I knew Dave had reached a cultural-assimilation milestone when he looked at this ball and said "look, there's a FOOTBALL caught in the river eddy". He didn't say "SOCCERBALL"!

The more  "honkey-tonk" part of the hike. I think this is the beginning of a summer trailer community. Lots of little trailers that were closed up for the winter.

A cute little goat.

A beautiful farm, basking in the sun.
