Luxembourg Week 1 (for the ENTIRE Dore clan)

I need to explain that i havent figured out how to have my posts read from start to finish. so far, they're reading from end to start. sorry about that. so, keep that in mind and i'll do some research to figure out how to fix this.

Feeding apples to a couple of friendly horses in the Mosel.

I picked an apple from the side of the road. took a bite and it wasn't too bad.

fed the rest to a donkey.

Our wine sampler server. very nice french man.

Drinking some "new wine" which only lasts for a couple of days before it goes "bad". it tasted like a cross between Kombucha and sweet white wine. the bottle is still in our fridge, probably going bad as i type.

Grapes on the vine in the Mosel! Not sure what kind they are, Pinot Noir?

The fields of grapes are just starting to turn to the autumn gold.

Catherine and dave decide to race up one of the hills:

I picked a bunch of grapes for the ride home:

enjoying some wine at the outdoor wine bar in Trier, Germany's oldest town.

Catherine and Dave at the wine bar.

One of the Roman ruins in Trier. Over 2,000 years old!

Dave, looking purposeful at the ancient ruins.

Catherine roaming the remains of the roman baths. i think this would be a great setting for a chase in a James Bond movie.

Catherine, as we were walking down to the "Grund"– a cool little section of the city in the very deep river valley that cuts through the entire city.

Me, trying to figure out what kind of meat is inside my little lunch bread pocket thing.

the bakery a block from our apt - where we got our first pastries! we had a cultural fau pax (sp?) when i started to self serve the pastries. There were two sets of tongs and bags  right next to the shelves so i went at it, american style. they woman behind the counter like that but was very nice about it, as far as i can tell, not knowing  much french, at all.

some fall color. we live on Rue du Wilmar and Rue du Cerisiers, which means "cherry trees" and yes, there is a row of cherry trees on our block–now if full autumn color:

Driving down the road on our "castle route" in the countryside of Luxembourg. I love how the trees are in a row, so close to the road. They're so ... I don't know, European I guess.

Breakfast day one–pastries from the bakery at the end of our block:

the park across the street, in the fog:

okay, so I'm here! after some hectic moments in Logan airport Catherine, the cats and i arrived in Frankfurt safe and totally out of it due to lack of sleep. crafty Catherine did a little trick that enabled our hefty Bruno to ride inside the cabin with us. his diet of the past few months didn't work as well and at the vet's office 2 days before departure he was still 2 pounds over the wgt. limit for riding inside the cabin (instead of the animal compartment in cargo). so, at the airport check-in counter, when we put him on the scale, i noticed that Catherine had placed the back corner on the frame around the scale platform, so part of the carrier was not weighed. with that little bit of help he made the weight, exactly at the limit! That made my day, week, month. i was so worried about him making it on. and thank god for the kitty Xanax, both Momma Cat and Bruno were totally mellow when we had to take them out of their carriers through the security metal detector and during the flight over. both of our neighboring passengers had no idea we had cats under our seats. Momma's drugs wore off as we were waiting for the customs vet to look over our paperwork. she was growling like mad. luckily, the vet didn't need to open the carriers.

Dave met us with a big smile and a beautiful bouquet of coral-pink roses. we walked what seemed to be a mile inside the airport (Frankfurt is a HUGE airport) to the parking garage and we got in and drove to our new home in Luxembourg City. The neighborhood and apt far surpassed my expectations and after a few trips to IKEA and lots of assembling of shelves and sofas, we are starting to feel at home. here are a bunch of highlights from the week.
