European Vacation Part IV: Barcelona

After all the excitement of finally finding pink flamingos, and about 4 hours of hearing Sal and Dave talk pirate, everyone was tuckered out. But we geared up for a few days in Barcelona! We had rented an apt in the city center on "Las Ramblas" and Sal had a conference to attend during the days.

Hope and Carly catching a snooze.

A peak at the Pyranese mountains as we got closer to the border of Spain.

We arrived in Barcelona in the late afternoon and after we settled in we took a stroll down Las Ramblas, past this statue of Christopher Columbus, and down to the marina.

We walked around the "Bari Gothic" and saw some cool things like this little pug ...

... and some hipsters having a drink in a cafe.

The view from our apt, of Las Ramblas. The apt turned out to be entirely too noisy. The street noise was really bad - lots of partying people yelling, traffic, etc. We only stayed 2 nights (instead of 3).

Carly and Ian, getting along much better than it appears in this photo.

Birds for sale on Las Ramblas. There were several stands selling birds and other pets like rabbits, turtles, tiny tortoises, ducks, hamsters, etc. Later we noticed that there were dozens of apartments had singing birds in cages on their balconies.

We spent the first full day checking out a couple of Gaudi buildings. Very very cool.

This was a very large apartment building, that was built around a courtyard.

Gaudi even designed the floor tiles.

And the curtains, furniture, lighting, etc.

On the roof deck with lots of funky-shaped stair wells.

Some beautiful murals inside the entry halls.

La Sagrada Familia, Gaudi's cathedral, still under construction. I felt like i was a part of history, seeing a cathedral in construction. I read of  so many cathedrals taking hundreds of years to complete, which seemed impossibl, and here I was, witnessing one that had already been under construction for 100 yrs, and wasn't expected to be finished until 2026.

Ian was losing his spark at this time of the day.

A huge, delcious pan of Paella later that night. Sal ordered it, remembering our parents did the same thing when we traveled as a family through Spain, in 1972.

It was delicious.

Carly jumping into the sand, on the beach of Barcelona!

The huge (possibly the biggest in Europe) market, La Boqueria. Had so much for sale, it was really amazing to see.

Some Jamon Iberica - very tasty and very expensive hams. So pricey that they were chained together!

A sampling of the incredible abundance of seafood, specifically from Galicia. I had never seen crabs like that before. So thick.

Some dapperly-dressed ladies selling various fishes.
