Paris Day One: On Foot

This past weekend we drove to Paris to visit Nils and Alejandro who just moved there. Using our trusty GPS aka "the marriage saver" we made it to Paris in under 4 hours.

In typical energetic Nils fashion, even though it was 11 pm he suggested we walk a few blocks to see the Arch du Triumph, which is just a few minutes from their apt in the 8th Arrondisement. It was much bigger than we had expected. Quite impressive. We stopped in the middle of the street and Nils took this photo. Apparently lots of tourists do that because the drivers seemed unphased.

Even though I was skeptical that we really could walk easily to the Eiffel Tower, i'm so glad we did. The blue lights and the misty air made it especially stunning. The floodlight illuminated the clouds as it rotated.  So romantic that i had to make Dave pose for this photo.

The blue and the ring of stars represent the European Union flag. Something about the EU was going on this year/month/week. i forget. sorry, Nils.

THe next day we awoke to this amazing view outside N & A's living room window.

And Nils had made us a delicious, healthy and aesthetically pleasing breakfast.

We then stopped at this really elegant, funky, and cozy cafe. The espressos and late were delicious and not as expensive as expected. 3 espressos and one late was about 5.25 Euros.

I LOVED the marble bar.

And then we went to the local market. It was by far the most gorgeous and bountiful and impressive and celebratory of food market I've ever seen.

Oh, the seafood.

And the mushrooms. curly ones, giant ones, wierd ones. expensive ones.

The cheese lady. She was serious.

More seafood. it was fun to see where everything was from. Russia, SPain, Madagascar, France (of course), etc.

Of course some lovely berry tartlettes.

and a horse butcher! i didn't know the French eat horse until it was on the menu at a restaurant down teh street from our apt. "Chevalier". you can get horse sausages, roasts, steaks, etc. i guess it's pretty tough.

Pretty sea urchins from Spain.

Some guy opening scallops for passersby.

The most Parisian looking man ever. he was eating a box of fresh blackberries, but he was all tough even with his scarf.

Another parisian-looking person, and her dog. Owners looking like their dogs.

A different market, after it has closed. we missed this one. next time we'll check it out.

Some street fashion. She looked like she was 17 yrs. old but she had quite the attitude, and a cigarette.

We kept walking and checked out the Latin Quarter. Very busy, but really nice, lots of open market stands, and very colorful and lively.

Some famous building that in the fog looked like a model and Nils was on set.

The "Guapos" at the small restaurant we ate at that night.
